The Tupolev Tu-22M Backfire (incorrectly called Badger in the game, which is the Tu-16 - a 1950s bomber which was retired by Russia and the former Soviet nations in 1993), is a Soviet/Russian supersonic swing-wing strategic/maritime strike bomber built by the Soviet aircraft maker Tupolev. The Tu-22M was an improved model of the not very successful Tu-22 Blinder (which was regarded as being inferior to the 1950s Tu-16) and was first flown in 1969, entering service with Soviet Air Force and Soviet Naval Aviation in 1972, the two braches used the Backfire differently, the Air Force used her as a strategic bomber whilst the Navy used her as a long-range anti-ship bomber. After the break-up of the USSR in 1991 the Backfire was used by the Russian Air Force and Russian Naval Aviation and former the Soviet territory, Ukraine, as with Russia the Backfire was used both by the Ukrainian Air Force and Ukrainian Naval Aviation, using them until 2004. India was also leased four in 2001 for maritime recon and strike purposes, these mayve been returned to Russia as theyre no longer used by the Indian Navy.
Production ended in 1993, 6 years after first being seen in combat (Afghanistan in 1987). The Tu-22M has been seen in combat in Afghanistan from 1987-1989, Chechnya in 1995 and in South Ossetia in 2008.
Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X.Edit
The Tu-22M is used by Artemis Global Security and an unnamed Private Military Company. A PMC (name unknown) uses a Tu-22M flight in an attempt to bomb an oil refinery which its ground forces, attack helicopters and fighter-bombers had been unable to destroy, thanks to the Reaper Flight. The bombers and their escorts were shot down by the Reaper Flight.
In the next mission Artemis uses a Backfire to bomb a terrorist training camp, Afganistan was harbouring the terrorists and wasn't allowing the United Nations to attack them so they launched their fighters to destroy the Artemis Backfire but they were all shot down by the Reaper Flight. Interesting the Artemis Backfire is shown as a B-52 Stratofortress in the picture which shows the unit whilst the unit is speaking but the cutscene and looking at the bomber in-flight correctly show it as a Backfire.
